Outstanding ultrabook combines style, power and portability

Last year was all about ultrabooks, with offerings from Asus, Acer and HP all fighting to top the pile. the Spectre Xt was one of the best and, upgraded, is still a top pick.

The price tag for this 13-inch laptop isn’t ridiculous and the design and build looks decidedly Apple MacBook Pro-esque. Everything from the pleasingly slim, curved screen bezel to the metal speaker grill which conceals four loud and brash Beats Audio speakers, exudes quality and  reassuring attention to detail.

Beneath the all-metal chassis HP has stored an Intel Core i5 processor. It’s not the most powerful chip on test, and the 4gB of RAM and plain Intel HD graphics 4000 chip mean it isn’t the strongest competitor when it comes to gaming, but it is capable of photo editing and multitasking smoothly. the 128gB solid state drive – there’s the option of a 256gB one for more moolah – means you’re likely to need to invest in cloud storage or an external drive, but is speedy, with Intel’s Rapid Start tech booting it up in seconds.

Up front you get a good, but not great, display with a 1366x768 pixel resolution. It makes a good fist of displaying movies with
plenty of colour, but is no match for a Retina Display and the trackpad isn’t as responsive as we’d like.

The ultra-slim profile – it measures just 8.3mm – means there’s not enough space to fit an ethernet socket, not an issue that will give many people sleepless nights, but the socket can be extended like a jaw to accept a cable if need be.

The battery life is respectable at just over seven hours. Plus, you can charge another gadget via USB with the lid shut.

A smart, stylish and properly portable laptop at a very reasonable price.

LOVE Attractive and sturdy all-metal design. Seriously thin and portable. great battery life. Beats Audio. Reasonably priced

HATE tricky touchpad. Screen could be better

NTN SAYS the smartest ultrabook on test. However, what it lacks in power it makes up for with style and portability
