A fully locked and loaded gaming laptop for serious fun
PC gaming is usually confined to the home purely because the power, accessories and floor space needed for a monolith of a gaming machine. Stuffing a gDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M with 2gB RAM alongside a giant battery, leaving space for a 32gB RAM upgrade above the 6gB as standard means the M17X is seriously bulky.
Open the lid and the glowing purple keyboard looks like the dashboard of the Millenium Falcon. yes, it’s gimmicky but the build quality is simply excellent and thoughtfully designed for gamers. Rubber, non-slip wrist rests, a backlit keyboard and quiet fan help with long gaming sessions.
The giant 17-inch screen boasts a 1600x900 resolution as standard, although, like every aspect of the machine, it can be upgraded to ludicrous levels of ability if you have the money. As it is, it’s a capable screen which impresses even in the most demanding FPS and racing game scenarios.
There are meatier and cheaper gaming options to be found via a desktop but as a laptop, the M17X is an amazing gaming machine which performs above what you would expect from a quadcore Core i7 processor and 6gB RAM.
The wide selection of connections include an HDMI out and 7.1 optical audio, useful if you want to use the M17X through your tV utilising your surround sound. If not, audio from the Klipsch-branded internal speakers is satisfyingly loud and engaging.
The battery lasts for three hours, shorter than most game campaigns, but has a quick release panel at the front, leaving dedicated gamers free to carry a spare battery. It’ll add weight to the already staggering 4.26kg, though. Portability is obviously not its greatest strength.
