Two Worlds Collide
The usual answer when asked to decide between two choices is, why not both? Frankly, it makes sense to try to cram two good things into one. Try is the point here. It doesn’t always work. It could use a snappier name though. Something a bit sharper, although they aren’t alone in this particular boat.GIANT TABLET
It has Android 4.0 on it. Which instantly leads one to imagine that it is, in fact, the logical step in massive smartphones. Until you notice that there is no slot for a SIM card. A minor setback at most really. I’m not entirely sure what Acer is trying to achieve here. It’s too large to be portable, yet I am compelled to try to move with it. Might be the Android OS messing with me.Another thing is that this also makes me think of a giant electronic picture frame. You know which ones. Such a large screen doesn’t make a touch interface work properly. A problem first introduced by Windows 8, and now brought to Android by this screen. A mash-up that isn’t quite symbiotic.
PORTS, PORTS AND MORE PORTS
Acer’s Smart Display has a crazy number of ports. Most of which are USB. They are also o charging ports. This represented a slight prob at the beginning (because I believe that manu are only opinions). So many ports, and yet non of them capable of being an input. The actua input is located behind a panel on the back o monitor. Astute readers will notice that I used the singular form there. This is because it onl accepts HDMI input. Not too much of an issu but it fails to live up to the number of neat thi that could be done with more inputs.
THERE IS ALSO A DISPLAY
One might even forget that this happens to be a monitor. Especially after all the other gimmicks running around this gizmo. For those looking for a monitor, this is not a bad choice. Colours are rather bright, and some images might turn out a little saturated, but smartphone users should be used to that by now. The refresh rate feels a little low, but that could be due to the Android OS hiding in the background. Smudding also occurs quite a bit due to the fact that nobody can resist using the touchscreen (for the sake of novelty).
WEIRD SWITCH
An interesting fact is that only the Android screen can be used with touch. Plugging in a Windows 8 device does nothing but display the screen. Disappointing , but then who uses the Win8 start screen ?
