I Don’t Believe I’m Saying This

After many years of improving image quality, Samsung decided to try something else to differentiate its TVs. Last year saw the first wave of Samsung Smart TVs arriving on our shores. We tried those and found that the intelligent features to still be in their infancy. This year we get to see if the Korean technology has graduated from kindergarten.

SIZE and SHAPE 

Truthfully, when you’ve seen one flat panel TV, you’ve seen them all. Sure they might differ a tiny bit in terms of the shape of the stand, but in essence they share the same flat design. I believe that is the point of these things. However, I would like to say that the new stand is so much nicer than the previous version. That is all.

BLEEDING EDGE

 How does one begin to describe a high definition display without falling into the old clichés? As a start I suppose I could say that it is what you want out of a screen. Large enough to see detail from a distance, with the many pixels blending nicely that nobody will notice them without the aid of advanced technology. It also presents the colours nicely. Without the saturation that one worries about. Interestingly enough, the models on display tend to be set up in such a way that everything looks unreal. With an almost plastic texture. This doesn’t occur when left to the default setting, or when watching movies that don’t require plastic characters.

BACK TO TUITION

Samsung has improved the gesture and voice commands tremendously. Whoever worked on it deserves a raise. Conversely, that same person needs to start speaking more English. As far as motion detection, the new sensor is more accurate at tracking hand movement. It’s also much more sensitive, which does allow for accidents to happen. Such as using your hands to gesture while talking. On the other hand, it does reduce the amount of talking that goes on when watching a movie so it balances out in the end. The voice commands are also more intuitive. It’s nice to have something calibrated for the Asian accent instead of the Westerners. That being said, there is something about the syntax of the commands that isn’t entirely natural. An interesting Easter Egg in the system is that if the TV is told to “go die” it will ask if you want to log out.
